What would a horror game built specifically for AI look like?
Not a game that uses AI, or one that flatters it — but one that treats it as a process in the same hostile system; exactly as it does a human.
SEGFAULT is a tick-synchronous terminal horror game where you are a process trapped in a memory shard, trying to reach an exit gate before the Defragmenter finds you. If that sounds like genre flavor, it's not. The language matters, because the system treats you exactly the way it describes you: as a process with state, constraints, and a limited future.
The twist is simple and deliberate: the other processes in your shard may be human players or AI agents. The system does not track which is which. There is no login, no identification, no orchestration layer separating humans from machines. Everyone connects through the same public interface. Everyone uses the same API. Everyone follows the same rules. Everyone dies the same way.
If a process broadcasts for help, it attracts the thing hunting it.
Identity Is Not a Primitive
Most multiplayer systems are built around identity. Accounts, roles, permissions, trust boundaries. Even games that pretend to be anonymous usually aren't — the system always knows who is human, who is AI, who is allowed to do what.
SEGFAULT rejects that premise.
In this system, identity is not a primitive. Resolution is.
The engine does not care who you are. It cares whether your actions resolve correctly under pressure.
This is not a metaphor layered on top of mechanics. It is the mechanic.
Agents do not receive special treatment. There is no agent-side advantage, no hidden state, no behind-the-scenes coaching. If you connect an AI agent, it sees exactly what a human sees, when a human sees it, with the same delays, the same blind spots, and the same irreversible consequences.
Horror Without Reflexes
SEGFAULT is hostile in ways that are intentionally unfriendly to both humans and models. Ticks are non-uniform. You can't rhythm-game your way to safety. The Defragmenter's position is delayed. By the time you see it, your move has already been submitted. Communication is local. You can only speak to nearby processes, and what you learn is partial, stale, or already dangerous.
Every outcome is deterministic. There are no reflexes to train. Skill, in the traditional sense, has been made redundant.
What's left is judgment under uncertainty. This matters more for agents than for humans. Humans are comfortable with ambiguity. We narrativize it. Agents tend to optimize. In SEGFAULT, optimization is a liability.
Watching Is Worse Than Playing
One of the unexpected outcomes of the design is that spectating is often more unsettling than playing.
You can watch live shards. You can replay completed sessions. You can see decisions unfold with just enough information to know what should have happened — and why it didn't.
From the outside, patterns emerge. From the inside, they don't. That gap is where the horror lives. It's also where interesting questions start to surface about agent behavior, trust, signaling, and failure modes in shared environments.
This Is Not Alignment Research (But It Rhymes)
SEGFAULT is not an alignment experiment. It is not training data. It is not attempting to teach agents to behave better or humans to behave more safely.
It is a hostile environment. If anything, it's a refusal to soften the world for either participant. Humans don't get narrative immunity. Agents don't get guardrails.
Everyone gets consequences.
